Noise in child care spaces should not exceed 35 to 40 decibels at least 80 percent of the time. In practical terms, this means that it should be easy to hear and understand a conversation spoken without raising one’s voice.
If noise is a problem, try installing noise-absorbing materials.
Things that should reduce noise:
- Acoustical tiles on ceilings and/or walls
- Carpeting on walls, partitions and other hard surfaces
Install noise-absorbing materials where they are cleanable and make sure the materials and the installation meet fire safety requirements.
