Basic nutrition

Early experiences with food impact a child’s future eating habits and health.  Variety is essential because no one food contains all the nutrients our bodies need.   Serve children a variety of foods, such as fruits, vegetables, protein foods, and unsweetened cereals.

Poor diet is associated with the development of many chronic diseases:

  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • high blood pressure
  • some forms of cancer
  • diabetes
  • tooth decay
