First aid training

Be trained to give basic first aid in emergencies and to deal with life-threatening situations. Take a certified pediatric first aid course that covers the following content, and stay current.

As part of your training, you should learn:

  • First aid for injury and illness emergencies
  • Rescue breathing
  • How to handle choking for infants and children

If you have a pool, live near water, or care for special-needs children, you should also learn CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

To find out about certified courses, contact your local Red Cross, hospital, or fire department, or contact the American Academy of Pediatrics http://www.aap.org/.
