Cigarettes and cigarette butts

Problem: Burns, nicotine poisoning, and secondhand smoke are all severe risks for children.

Solution:

  • Keep ashtrays and cigarettes out of children’s reach.
  • Never smoke while holding a baby or when you are in close physical contact with a child.
  • If you smoke during child care hours, arrange for someone else to supervise the children while you smoke. Limit your smoking to areas away from the child care area where neither the smoke nor the lesson that trusted adults smoke are available to children.
  • Always extinguish butts completely and dispose of them in the trash.
