Lead paint

Problem: Lead poisoning

Check the paint in your home and the soil around your house for lead content.

If lead is found:

  • Arrange to have the lead paint professionally removed or covered up.  This is not a do-it-yourself job.  Incorrect removal may release more lead into the environment.
  • Wash your hands and the children’s hands frequently, especially before eating and when coming in from outdoor play to avoid lead exposure.
  • Regularly clean, vacuum, wet dust, and wet mop your house.  This removes lead dust from floors, counters, and other surfaces.
  • Consult a local health professional.  Lead poisoning cannot be prevented through supervision alone since a common source of lead is dust.
