Scalding hot water
Problem: Scald burns
Check the temperature of your hot tap water using a meat thermometer or a hot water gauge. Lower the hot water temperature to 50 degrees Celsius (120 degrees F). At 50˚C, it takes 10 minutes for a third degree burn to occur. At 55˚C (130 degrees F), the time is 30 seconds.
- IF the hot water temperature is regulated by a single unit hot water heater, you can turn the setting to “low” or “warm” and retest the water temperature.
- IF the water temperature is regulated through the furnace, you may have to have the water temperature adjusted by a heating specialist or plumber. A mixing valve can be installed where the water is delivered to the sinks, showers and tubs that mixes cold water with hot water to make it a safe temperature. These valves are not expensive, and are easily installed by a plumber.
- IF there is only one sink used by the children, have a mixing valve installed. Until the valve is installed, check underneath the sink to see if you can turn off the hot water valve, at least during child care hours.

You may want to purchase hot water boosters to increase the hot water temperature of the dishwasher, clothes washer, or other appliances once you have turned the temperature down.
