Toy chests

Problem: Head or neck injury, suffocation

Replace the toy chest with open shelves so children can select their toys and help clean up.  Make sure the shelves are lightweight or attached to the wall so children can’t get hurt from shelves falling on them.

If you want to keep using the toy chest:

Remove the toy chest lid

Use a toy chest with:

  • A strong, slow-closing safety hinge
  • No latch (if the toy chest has a latch, remove it)
  • A lid with air holes (you can use a drill to make air holes on your own)
