Teach children bicycle safety rules as soon as they begin riding things with pedals (such as tricycles).
There are five essential rules:
- Always wear a properly fitted helmet.
- Ride only on something that is the right size for you.
- Ride on the same side of the road as the cars traveling in the same direction you are going.
- Learn hand signals to let others know what you will do (right and left turning, stopping).
- Stop before crossing any street to look left-right-left, scanning for cars.
