Bicycle safety

Teach children bicycle safety rules as soon as they begin riding things with pedals (such as tricycles).

There are five essential rules:

  1. Always wear a properly fitted helmet.
  2. Ride only on something that is the right size for you.
  3. Ride on the same side of the road as the cars traveling in the same direction you are going.
  4. Learn hand signals to let others know what you will do (right and left turning, stopping).
  5. Stop before crossing any street to look left-right-left, scanning for cars.
